As the Assistant Director of Business & Operations, Derek manages HLM's administrative, operational, and financial systems. From human resources to accounting, he has a hand in everything related to business development and program development.

HLM programming has a national and global reach, but it’s the impact made with local community partners that drives Derek. He has seen firsthand how imprecise health care messages strain the doctor-patient relationship. He has also seen how HLM’s work with great community partners provides programming people can use to improve those relationships and their health. Derek believes that health literacy can break down informational barriers and help people navigate the complex health care system with confidence.

The nature of his position puts him both behind the scenes and in the middle of the action. He manages the company finances and coordinates with the accountant. He also handles audits, invoicing, accounts payable, and makes sure HLM is compliant with city and state guidelines and regulations. But his responsibilities don’t end when the paperwork does. As a collaborative member of the HLM team, he has the privilege of working with great people, great minds, and great peers. He meets with the staff regarding program work and heads up human resources.

Before HLM, Derek worked for the City of St. Louis business license collector’s office as an accounting clerk and manufacturing auditor. In that role, he managed the audits and processing of business applications.

Derek has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Harris Stowe
State University.
