Health Literacy & Science Writer
Melanie Schwarz
MA
As a Health Literacy & Science Writer, Melanie reviews and writes content for a variety of materials, from brochures to websites to video scripts. Using her keen editor’s eye, she applies health literacy best practices to revise complex jargon into reader-friendly language. She also helps to develop and deliver HLM's plain language trainings.
Before moving to St. Louis from her home country of Germany, Melanie worked as an editor for Random House publishing, helping to bring book ideas to life. Having gone through a complicated immigration process, she knows firsthand the challenges of navigating bureaucratic forms and the complicated U.S. healthcare system as well as the value of clear, user-friendly documents.
At HLM, Melanie uses her publishing background to bring out the best in the materials we review for our clients. She is passionate about language and its power to educate and inspire people, and she enjoys applying her knowledge of public health campaigns and health communications to her work. Before joining HLM, she also worked as a bookseller and freelance editor.
Melanie holds a Master’s Degree in English Literature and American Studies from the University of Würzburg in Bavaria, Germany. She also has a Certificate in Health Communication from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
